Jury retires at priest's sex trial
Thursday, 17 July, 2008
A Sydney jury has retired to consider its verdicts at the trial of a Catholic priest and dormitory master accused of raping and indecently assaulting boys.
Father Paul Raymond Evans has pleaded not guilty in the NSW District Court to 20 charges involving seven boys between 1977 and 1988.
Evans, a member of the Catholic order the Salesians of Don Bosco, is accused of 10 counts of homosexual intercourse by a teacher, eight counts of indecent assault and two acts of indecency.
In his evidence to the jury, Evans admitted sometimes hugging and comforting the teenage students in his dormitory.
But he denied touching them sexually, taking them away at weekends, lying in their beds or raping them.
After a four-week trial, Judge Robert Hulme sent the jurors out today to begin their deliberations.
